For a leading Finnish waste management company a concept for increasing the recovery rates of household waste was created due to the new EU requirements in 2011.
Rising raw material and energy prices and the great interest of the Finnish paper and metal manufacturing industry for affordable secondary raw materials lead to a new pathway away from landfills. Modern processing technology and anaerobic treatment of organic ingredients are utilized.
A state of the art biogas upgrading unit was included in the engineering concept.
Biogasplant St. Veit/Glan

At that time in St. Veit/Glan the largest biogas plant in Europe was built based on renewable resources in 2002.
We were responsible for the basic authorization, building supervision and commissioning supervision.
Organic waste treatment

We designed a significant enlargement of the capacity by revamping the dry fermentation plant with a new wet CSTR fermenter for an existing organic waste processing plant. Beginning with a preliminary design we provided later on basic, authority and detailed engineering services.
New features of the modernized plant are an intermediate bunker, a separation step for biowaste, a CSTR fermenter, a manure separation, hygienization unit, a final storage tank with integrated gas holder; an air purification system; a digestate drying instead of a the existing composting plant.
The additional fermentation line is suitable for the treatment of structureless organic waste and residues, thus supplementing the dry fermentation.

Biogas plant Maria Lankowitz
Customer: BIG Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft

For the penitentiary Maria Lankowitz and for the Austrian real estate management company we designed and managed the modernization of the oldest Styrian biogas plant that has been built in 1984. All engineering steps from preliminary draft study until commissioning were done by us.
The food waste processing plant includes also a hygienization unit and utilizes all residues from the farm. The goal is not only to provide a significant amount of energy which is necessary for heating all buildings but also to supply electric energy and also feed the surplus into the public grid.
The project was particularly challenging due to the close neighborhood and because of the institution character.
Biogas plants Retz and Ziersdorf
Customer: Biopower GmbH
Period: 2006 – 2008
This Biogas installation was one of the largest ever built in Austria. Starting from a project draft all engineering project steps were accomplished by us. Construction supervision and the final authority commissioning project were other important tasks. The project was worth € 15 million and has a power output of 2 x 1.5 MWe from the fermentation of renewable raw materials at the sites Retz and Ziersdorf in Lower Austria.
Expert opinion on a biogas desulphurization plant

An expert opinion on a significant damage caused by a biogas desulphurization unit as part of a biogas plant was issued for a legal court.
Project sludge digestion – COWI

On behalf of one of the major North European engineering companies an innovative concept for anaerobic processing of industrial, commercial and municipal organic waste has been engineered in 2012.
7.4 million Nm ³ of methane shall be produced out of 270.000 tons of organic sludge each year.
